Show Guidelines given for buying carpet Buying carpet can be difficult because there are so many different carpet fibers available. Which are the best? What do the names represent? The Better Business Bureau offers these guidelines: Wool. Wool carpeting costs more than other fibers but has many desirable characteristics. It resists dirt and grime and is easy to clean. It remains resilient, soft and comfortable even after it has been subjected to constant wear. Nylon. This man-made fiber represents about 75 of all pile fibers used for carpeting in the United States. Nylon has outstanding abrasion resistance. It doesn't show wear quickly in high traffic areas. Also nylon is easy to dye and the colors are "fast," making the product resistant to water-soluble stains. Cleaning is easy. Advanced Nylon Products. The newly-created fibers in this type carpeting actually "conceal" and resist soiling. There are no static problems that cause an "electrical shock" when you scoot across the carpeting in leather shoes when the humidity is low. You can expect to pay slightly more for these advanced generation nylons as compared to the standard nylons. Acrylic. Acrylic fibers are man-made man-made but have the appearance and feel of wool. Features include good abrasion resistance and crush resistance. Acrylic fibers also tend to resist stains and are easy to clean. Polyester. Polyester fibers retain their color and luster. They are easy to clean and have excellent resilience and texture retention. Polypropylene. This fiber is used for indooroutdoor carpeting. The carpeting will take hard wear and still retain its color. The selection of colors, however, may be limited. |
