Show M1 going 1 A V t l '' . f ? It took Frank Laga of Pleasant Grove 60 years before he competed in a contest of athletic prowess but when he did he came home a winner. Laga garnered five medals one gold, two silver and two bronze - at the recent Golden Age Games, sponsored by the Post Cereal Company in Sanford, Fla. He competed in the 60-64 age group. It was the fit senior citizen's first attempt at competition, but he says its not his last, as he plans to seek a sponsor to attend next year's games as well. Laga entered 20 of the events in the games, which saw 2,000 seniors . participate. His medals came in the high' jump, gold; one-on-one, basketball, and two-mile walking race, silver; and football throw and canoeing obstacle course, bronze. He also entered several bicycling events, the decathlon, swimming and virtually every track event offered in the week-long competition. Laga became interested in the Golden Age Games through friends who live in St. Louis. 'They invited me to go with them," he said. "I was the only participant from west of the Mississippi." He hadn't had time for such activities until his recent retirement from U.S. Steel's Geneva Plant, where he had worked for 36 years. Now Laga keeps in shape bicycling, mountain climbing, playing tennis and racquetball, and dancing three nights a week. Laga says he came to Utah during .World War IL He was stationed in Kearns in 1947, and stayed around after the war. He's still here and says he plans to stay. To keep busy, he'll continue conditioning for next year's games where you don't have to be young to be good. |
