WENDY DAVIS shows how the spinning wheel was used in days of yore at the country fair held at Manila School. Country Store : Bringing back days of yore Children of Manila Elementary School set up a Country Store at the school recently to show things which pioneers would have bought and also to sell baked goods to raise money. Items sold included candy, popcorn balls, suckers, cookies, scones, and pumpkin pie. The money will be used to reimburse some parents for materials, pay for the fourth grade field trip and buy books for the school. All the baked goods were homemade and donated to the fair. In addition, two horse costumes were made and donated to the school. Many parents helped in teaching the songs and even grandparents got involved in teaching the square dancing. Parents donated generously to the fair and were involved in preparing for it. The children were in performances which were given on the stage of the school gym. Some students presented four different square dances. A chorus presented five songs which pioneers actually sang. A skit taken from mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer" was performed. Various contests were held including a tug of war, arm wrestling, stick pulls and Indian Leg wrestling. Other students helped run the country store. All students participated in making three quilts. Each student drew a picture which was ironed onto a square of material. Those squares were sewn together to make three quilts. The quilts were then tied at the Fair. One area of the gym was set up to display various pioneer artifacts, including farm implements, kitchen utensils, guns, pictures, and other relics from pioneer days. A blacksmith, Brian Fugal, was there showing some of his smithing tools to the students. A spinning sheel was demonstrated, as was an antique rope making machine. Students were shown how taffy, butter and bread dough were made. Students made various decorations for the pioneer day which included props for the skit and posters advertising the fair which were displayed around the school. The entire school had a chance to view the square dancing, play and singing at an assembly the morning of Nov. 21. Those same .performances were also presented at the afternoon fair when parents and visitors were also invited to come. |
