Sherm Varney honored by local Scouts Special honors' were given to Sherm Varney, a Pleasant Grove , resident for many, yearsj at the Timpanogos District' Fellowship, and Awards Banquet held Nov. 4, 1983. .' Mr-. Varney has retired after serving for seven years as the Chairman of Timpanogos District, Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Varney was presented the 2nd Miler Award and the District Award of Merit in cognition of his' many years of, dedicated service to Scouting.1 Sherm began his scouting career in 1936. As a young man, Sherm achieved the rank of Life Scout; as, adult scouter, he attended the 1966 World Jamboree with a son, ?nd attended Woodbadge Training 1975. He rededicated himself to 'he ideals of Woodbadge in 1982 at tolwell Field, England, the birthplace of Woodbadge Training. ie . has ; earned the Scouter's 'raining Award and the Scouter's Sherm has also been honored th the Silver Beaver Award for i outstanding contribution to scouting in the district. - Mr. Varney has served as a Scoutmaster, District commissioner, commis-sioner, District Chairman, and is currently serving as the Advisor to the Order of the Arrow in Area Two of the Western District. Area Two services all of Utah as well as several other states. Sherm's zeal for scouting has rubbed off on his and Mary's three sons, all of whome are Eagle Scouts and are now involved , as adult Scout leaders. ' '. Mr. Varney has also served in many positions in theLDS Church; including Ward Clerk, Elders Quroum President, and High Priest Croup Leader. Mr. Varney retired last June after 37 years with U.S. Steel. He is a member of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers. He served for 10 years as the President of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and is a past president of the Lion's Club. Harold Jacklin, of Pleasant Grove, has been elected as the new District Chairman. He has been serving as Vice-Chairman. Mr. Jacklin is an administrator in the Alpine School District. : i |
