Show D.C. Close Up Program enjoyed 4y PGHS students By JACK HILL $W Washington, D.C, was the site of a reek long educational experience for S 1 Steveral Pleasant Grove residents last i PolJyeek. l Roberta Hansen, Krystin Hill, J. ilade Holman and Kristin Roper, Jus Jack Hill, high school teacher, lb. and Mrs. Rial Allan and Mrs. lrptta Roper spent the week in the ablation's Capitol - participating in - :lose UP. t "Close Up" is .a non profit Dundatdon that brings students, jachers and other interested ersons to Washington for an IrtMlxtensive week of study, seminars '"'"'nd tours. The goal is to give people a close up view" of the Federal lovemment in action and to see first and the historical sites and ionument8 of the city. . Other participating Utah County I chools were American Fork, Lehi, J 'impview and Springville. A total of 9 participants from throughout IJtah were housed in the Sheraton Washington Hotel with 125 students nd teachers from Houston, Texas. I I Small group workshops led by the Hose Up staff were used to review laterial and ideas presented in icfure-question sessions on topics Jpch , as "Lobbying," "Domestic psties," "Politics of the Defense NgeC "The Presidency," and i 8X68. Social activities included a Dinner Hieatre and a performance of The pirates of Penzance, a dance, pizza ight and a formal banquet Most tudents enjoyed rooming with tudents from another state and the pportunity to exchange ideas. Personal appearances of Senators latch and Garn in the Senate office a uilding8 gave Utah participants an 'llpportunity to see their elected (Representatives in action and the nance to ask questions. Utah jounty students also met with representative Howard Nielson in is private office in the Longworth louse Office Building. A special feature of the week was a reas conference with President Jeagan in the White House. This ,as limited to 40 students chosen by t Glade Holman was selected as ne of 40 students to meet with the ecretary of the Army, John Marsh, r a similar press conference. Pleasant Grove natives working in 'ashington that the members of the roup were able to see and talk with lcluded Ed Darrell, press secretary Senator Hatch, Suzy Fugal, enator Hatch's secretary and Liz ck, a secretary in the Executive race Building of the White House. Money for the trip came from the lose Up Foundation, individual jnds and merchants and groups in ieasant Grove. The students wish thank Story Pharmacy, Gene laryey Chevrolet and the Kiwanis jub for helping finance this lucational trip.
