Show Review - Wednesday, November 10 las') srpaDirtts Vikes go to play-off- s - dump Dixie 21-2- 9 Pleasant Grove bought a ticket to Rice Stadium in Salt Lake City tomorrow by dumping previously unbeaten Dixie, 21-1- 9 in St. George Friday. The Vikes sprinted to a 14-- 0 halftime lead but saw a powerful Dixie ground attack punch in two third period scores to close the gap to 14-1- PG dominated the first half and Dixie definitely won the third quarter. But the Vikes recovered Lo control the final 12 minutes. Back on the 27th of August, both teams opened the season with a night game on the same field, Dixie's Sun Bowl. That game was statistically won by the Vikes but was claimed in the win column, 14-- 8 by Dixie. The lush green Sun Bowl of August was the "Dust Bowl" of November. Bare, dusty ground was all that remained across much of the field. "When the dust cleared", was an expression that was literally true following each play. The sun drenched, 70 degree day compensat-ed for the poor playing surface and hundreds of PG fans enjoyed the game after making the 280 mile trip from Utah County. Although the field might not have looked to good it didn't seem to bother the Viking team. Curt Harrison carried 34 times for 177 yards with Jason Allred packing the leather 9 times for 40 yards. Dixies defensive 4-- 4 alignment took away the outside run in PG's triple option attack but vicious blocking inside with big "Lou" Harrison crashing between the tackles allowed the Vikes to roll up 245 yards rushing. Dixie gained 132 yards on the ground and 95 of those came in the third quarter. When Hud Rynio and Dave Esplin traded gains against PG's defense. Picking up from where it left off the previous week against Judge Memorial, the Vikes ground game moved the ball with smooth execution. First quarter fumbles halted two drives and PG had no points to show for 109 yards in offense. Early in the second period, PG was called for an illegal block that nullified a Darren Frampton pass catch good for 25 yards. On the next play, quarterback Clark Hill was dropped for a short loss and that set up a third and 21 situation on PG's 20 yard line. After a time out to discuss the play, the Vikes lined up in a "shot gun" formation and Hill surprised Dixie with a 65 yard quick kick that rolled dead on the Flyer 14. Two plays later Esplin fumbled and Phil Cook recovered for the Vikes. Hill capped the short drive by following Brent McAllister up the middle from a yard out. Leo Biggs, Frampton, and Hill worked together for a perfect point after kick and the Vikes were ahead, 7-- Dixie was unable to move the ball following Scott Walkers 55 yard kickoff and Esplin 's punt rolled dead at the Viking 14. PG geared up for a defensive stand and after a first down, Biggs sacked Esplin and knocked the ball loose where Kelly Sanderson recovered for the Vikes. Acting like they could taste the trip to Salt Lake, PG's offensive line blew off the ball as though it was the first quarter. With Harrison clutching the ball with both hands, PG drove to the Dixie 18. On fourth and one, Hill's bootleg pass was batted high in the air and in the mad mele that followed, Imlay ended up with the ball at the 13. The interception gave Dixie the ball in nearly the same spot they would have gotten it had a running play come up short but the play seemed to give the Flyers an emotional lift. With three minutes to play, Esplin passed 9 yards. Esplin then rolled left and threw a tremendously high pass back across the field where Wade was running an in and out pattern. Hilton had the Dixie receiver covered perfectly but in the jumping battle for the ball, Wade came out of the tangle with the ball, broke a tackle and raced into the endzone. The play covered 77 yards. The Vikes narrj won the league match back October 1, by the score of u Another classic game is expected On first down, Hill faked to Harrison and the middle of Dixies line poinced on the PG fullback. But Hill still had the ball and after a five step backpeddal, Hill stopped and lofted a perfect pass to Craig Hilton who had beated Ron Wade, Dixies fine cornerback. Hilton took the ball in full stride and outraced Esplin to the goaline. Hill's point after kick split the uprights and PG now led 14-- Walker picked off an Esplin pass (see photo this page) with 56 seconds left in the first half. After a 16 yard pass to Frampton, the Vikes tried to get off their trick double pass play. Defensive tackle, Darren Implay, smelled out the first pass to Walker and Hill wisely dropped to a knee and ate the ball as the half ended. Roles were reversed in the third period. Dixie took the kick and drove 72 yards to score. Rynio carried the final four yards. Esplin lined up to kick the point after but then took the snap and roll around the right side on a run-pas- s option. With the defense swarming in, Esplin's pass fell incomplete because Todd Jasper and Walker had the receivers well covered. A big play in that touchdown drive was a fake punt that Esplin ran for six yards and a first down. Dixie drove to PG's seven on their next posession. Rynio hit off right tackle but Mark Harvey and Brad Kitchen stopped him for no gain and the ball popped loose. Offensive guard, Scott Fuller caught the ball and dove in for the unusual touchdown. Again Esplin lined up for the kick and again the fake was on. Wade took the snap and with Esplin trailing, the pair tried to run an option around the left end. Wade pitched to Esplin but two Viking defenders came up strong and stopped the 190 pound quarterback short of the pylon for no score. Time expired during the Dixie touchdown and PG opened the final 12 minutes in a "must control the ball" situation. Harrison, Allred and Hill carried for 43 yards and Hill passed to Hilton for 7 yards and a key first down. A 15 yard pass interference penalty against the Flyers prevented Frampton from catching a ball that looked good for at least a 20 yard gain. Harrison covered the final three yards with a diving effort and PG led 21-1- 2 with seven minutes showing on the clock. The combination of Biggs, Frampton and Hill clicked for the third exptra point and the Vikes were on top 21-1- a margin that forced Dixie to score twice to win. . . , ... , ; ..... n . - j f . i ' i ; ; kaV'V'-- 4 k '&.'ti-- :'f? r yy:- - m.' i,-- ' .:fv ': " ;V ..v f ryypy':v':- - li'f j.
