Third place in the tourney went to the Pirates, a team that beat both league winners, the Mets and Cards, during the tournament, but lost to the Dodgers. In the Pirate-Met game, the Mets loaded the bases in the last inning and closed the score to 8-7 before Travis Hansen struck out the last Met hitter to give the Pirates the upset win. The Cards, after a first round loss to the Pirates, won two straight games to claim the consolation spot and fourth place in the tourney. With the State UBBA Little League Pinto Tournament starting, Monday, August 2, six Pleasant Grove teams are getting ready to play in that huge 48 team, six day affair. According to Kent Larsen, assistant coach of the Cards, it will take 88 games during the week at Spanish Fork to decide the eventual champion. The six Pleasant Grove teams who earned the right to play in the tournament tour-nament by their finish in league play are: Mets, the National League champions; Cubs, second place in the National League, and the third place National League Astros. From the American League the champion Cards will be making the "umpteenth" tourney appearance; the Yankees, who tied with the Cards for first place in the American League but lost a playoff game, and the third place Dodgers who were second in the city tourney. Teams from Orem, Sanpete, Spanish Fork, Salina, Payson, Nephi, Monticello and Pleasant Grove are scheduled to play, with games played at the Spanish Fork baseball complex at 300 South 100 West, Spanish Fork. The cost of a tourney pass is unknown, but with 88 games to be played it has to be a bargain. Good luck to the PG players, coaches and parents. |
