It can be a relaxing hobby or a grueling and sometimes viciously intense form of competition. It's a sport in which you can defeat your opponent, then wonder (as you stagger out of the playing area with sore muscles and burning lungs) who really lost. The sport is racquetball, and the number of participants nationwide is at least approaching, if not well into, the millions; racquetball clubs have sprung up in virtually every major city and many small ones across the country. One-hundred sixty of these slightly masochistic players got together in American Fork last week to compete for cash, trophies and the opportunity to win a free waterbed in the third annual Renaissance Waterbed-Tri-City Courts racquetball tournement. "I'm sure this was the largest tournement ever held in Utah County," said Ron Peck, owner-manager owner-manager of the Tri-City Supreme Racquetball Courts. He explained that the tournament was sanctioned by the Utah Racquetball Association (URA) and that it drew athletes lo compete in 18 divisions. Nearly half of all the entrants came from outside the American Fork area. So who got the free waterbed to soothe those aching muscles? Linda Roberts of Provo. While she has been playing racquetball for just two or three years, Linda entered the tournament with the same chance as as the professionals to take home the bed; names of all participants were automatically entered in a drawing held on the last day of competition. Her partner in novice doubles action, Sue Miller, said the stars may have had something to do with the drawing. "Linda's astrograph in the paper said this is a good day," she said. "It meant we were going to win something." According to Renaissance Waterbed owner Jeff Allen, the waterbed, made of beautifully finished wood with a mirror built into the headboard, is worth $379; and the Continued on Page A-3 Tension Ron - "lXZ quc.ban Club, prepares to serve afiains. an p P n. n I .. Among the players from out of town was Kyle Kamalu, Provo, winner of the men's open division. Kamalu is a professional al (he Canyon Racquet Club and is currently ranked 24lh in the nation. The tournament was run on a modified double-elimination basis with trophies awarded to the (op three places and to the consolation winner. Divisions were established according to the players' skill level. "The URA ranks all the different divisions and alter a person gels so many points they move him up a division automatically," said Peck. "Sometimes the players will realize their ability has improved enough that they will move up a division themselves." For the $15 entry fee ($6 for doubles), participants received a T-shirt, T-shirt, compiments of Renaissance Waterbeds and the satisfaction of a good effort. According to Peck, the fee also paid for tournament balls, court time and refreshments. TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Open Division 1. Kyle Kamalu 2. RickStrout 3. Robert Rankin 4.
