O - i , ft- - v -. x , .- FLAMING GORGE LAKE- Flaming Gorge Dam backs up a giant lake that is 91 miles long at capacity. 'Surrounding this huge body of water are deep, vertical-walled cliffs, painted in vivid colors: forested mountains: and breathtaking exposures that make this region a true tourist's paradise. The lower end (in Utah) has become a popular recreation area for fishermen, water-skiers, campers and sightseers. Tlie Utah State Division of Parks and Recreation maintains properties and facilities at 44 State parks, beaches, reserves, recreation areas, museums and state historical monuments. The State Parks of Utah consists of areas totaling 63,000 acres of land; over a million acres ot noalmg and water related areas including the 1,500 square miles of water recreation potential at Gre.ii Sail Lake. Utah's State park system provides approximately 825 ,!uii;ilual campsites anu a aiu-ly of group facilities. There is open space for camping and outdoor recreation activities. Ten hisiorical monument and museum areas are scatiered throughout the state. For everyone lo fully enjoy L'tah's Slate parks, certain rules and - regulations must be observed. ob-served. FIREARMS AM) FIREWORKS Use of firearms is prohibited except ex-cept during established hunting seasons. Consult park ranger for established hunting seasons. Fireworks are prohibited. FLORA-FAUNA All plants and animals are protected in State parks. It is unlawful to molest them in anyway. FIRES Fires may be built . only in designated areas. All developed campsites provide camp stoves, fire rings or charcoal facilities.' In undesignated campsite areas please check with the park ranger for areas where ground fires are permitted. Firewood is not generally available in State park areas. It is unlawful to cut, break or mutilate any tree or shrub (living or dead) within a State park. VANDALISM It is unlawful to burn, cut or mutilate any railing, bench, table, fence, sign, building, or other structure within a Slate park. Soil, rocks or sand may not be removed. PETS- Pets are allowed in Utah State parks, provided owners help them observe the rules. They must be kept on a leash or otherwise confined at all limes. They arc not allowed on beaches or permitted to enter lakes or streams. Seeing-eye dogs are the only animals allowed in park buildings. Overnight Camping Overnight camping is permitted in state parks designated for camping (see activitiesfacilities chart). Length of stay for each park is generally limited to 10 or 14 days within any 30-day period. Check-out time is 4:00 p.m. in all parks. Reservations for use of individual campsites are available at the developed parks (see "reservation" panel). It is unlawful to dump or to allow waste water from campers or Season? 0 Use In Staie Parks State parKs normally rernam open and available year-round 'or varying day-ule day-ule activities. Winter weather may limit the use of some areas. Rest rooms, water hydrants and visitor centers piay not be available during the winter. Use Fees And Passes A day-use or overnight camping fee is charged for use of developed State park and recreation areas. These areas provide spaces for tents, campers or travel trailers. Picnic tables, grills, trash containers, water hydrants, and modern restrooms are also availaDle. Many campgrounds cam-pgrounds provide showers, fish cleaning stations, sanitary dump stations and service sinks lor waste disposal. Utility hook-ups for recreational vehicles are provided at: Dead Horse Point State Park, Miner-sville Miner-sville Lake, Show Canyon State Park, and Wasatch Mountain State Park. Additional Ad-ditional fees are charged for special uses such as golfing, ice skating, boat mooring, chalet or visitor center rentals, group use facilities and reservation fees. An annual State park pass termed "Fun Tag" is available for use in Utah's State Parks. The permit allows the driver and occupants oc-cupants of a noncommercial vehicle unlimited entrance and day use of facilities at all State parks provided space is available. Possession of the "Fun Tag" does not exempt its holder from paying the overnight camping or special use fee. For Utah residents over 62 years of age or permanently disabled, a free "special" lifetime pass is available. Overnight camping and special use fees still apply, however. Recreation Vechicles Off-Highway Vehicle Use There are a number of excellent Off-Highway Vehicle riding areas within, adjacent to, or originating from State Parks and State Recreation areas throughout Utah. Eight areas; Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Escalante Petrified Forest, Goblin Valley, designated areas at both the Saltair Beach and Antelope Island Districts of the Great Salt Lake State Park, Kadachrome Basin, Steinaker Lake, and Yuba Lake especialy ofer either on site or nearby riding opportunities. The Division of Parks and Recreation presently leases three tracks of land near Utah's urban population centers for off-highway riding enthusiasts. These areas include: Lark Sand Dunes Off-Highway Vehicle Park with 413 acres in the south-western sector of Salt Lake Valley; the 40-acre "Motoqua" O.H.V. facility in west-central Salt Lake City ; and the Brigham City Motorcycle Park in northern Utah. Leases on these as well as other privately owned lands leased by the State may be subject to change from year to year. Whenever possible, riders should check with local personnel for current information in-formation and up-dates. A majority of roadways leading to State Parks and many inner-park roads are designated "public highways." high-ways." State law requires that motorized vehicles using public road systems meet licensing requirements for both vehicle and operator. . It is unlawful to dump or to allow waste water from campers or trailers to drain on the ground in State parks. Most developed parks now provide either utility sinks andor sanitary dump stations to facilitate proper disposal. State parks normally remain open and available year-round for overnight camping and varying day use activities. Winter weather and freezing temperatures may limit park use in some areas. A concessionaire provides food and boat rental services. Fishing and waterskiing are the principle prin-ciple attractions during the summer. The recreation area serves as a popular snowmobiling trailhead during the winter. 17. GREEN RIVER STATE RECREATION AREA Located just off Interstate 70 on the southeast edge of Green River City. This. 40-unit 40-unit State park serves as an embarking point for the 180-mile 180-mile annual "Friendship Cruise" and other "white water" float trips. 18. GUNLOCK LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA Huntington Lake just outside Huntington, Utah offers visitors 15 camping and picnic units, drinking water, a concrete boat launching ramp, toilets, and group use facilities. 20. HYRUM LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA Located near Hyrum, Utah. Provides boating, fishing, waterskiing, camping and beach facilities on a 457-acre lake. Visitors will find rest rooms, paved ' pan-.ing and overnight cam. ling sites April through November. 23. LOST CREEK LAKE STATE BEACH Located 15 miles northeast of Hennifer, Utah in Morgan County. Lost Creek Lake provides 345 acres of lake surface for boating, fishing and water sports. Access roads are graveled. Limited facilities include: boat launching ramp, parking space and pit privies. 24. MILLSITE LAKE STATE BEACH A newly created 435-surface-acre lake west of Ferron, Utah. Provides a setting for water oriented activities. Boat launching ramp, parking area, and toilets are present for visitor use. 25. MINERSVILLE LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA A boating-camping recreation area located on the eastern shore of Minersville Reservoir near Minersville, Utah. Boat launching ramp, culinary water, utility hook-ups, modern rest rooms, and fish cleaning facilities are provided. 29. OTTER CREEK LAKE STATE BEACH Situated four miles north of Antimony, Piute County on the shore of the 2,500 acre Otter Creek Reservoir is one of Utah's most recently developed State park facilities. Camping and picnicking units, modern rest rooms with hot water and showers, fish cleaning and sewage dump stations, ramp and docks are available. Fishing and boating are the main ac- t . tivities of the park. I, j . 30. PALISADE LAKE ' , STATE RECREATION AREA Tree-lined and cool best describes this Utah water recreation area. Located 6 miles south and 1 mile east of Manti, Utah. The area provides a 24-unit campground cam-pground with modern rest rooms," showers and sewage dump station. This 30 acre lake is closed to motorized boats. It is a pleasant setting for swimming, canoeing, fishing and other quiet water activities. A 9-hole golf course is adjacent to the park. 33. PIUTE LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA A 2,250 acre mountain lake located 12 miles south of Marysvale, Utah just off U S. Highway 89. Facilities are limited. For those who ' enjoy an uncrowded, quiet atmosphere, this park (Cont.onpage 17) '. "I I boating facilities in these areas include concrete launching ramps, courtesy docks, parking for towing vehicles and bo?t trailers. ' Camping facilities and rest' rooms are also available. Fifteen parks provide mooring (wot) and-or parking 'dry) areas for boaters who wish to leave iheir boats at the site for an extended period. They are: Bear ' ike State Recrea' ion Area. .Jeer Creek Lakt vute Recreation Area. Great Salt Lake (Saltair Beach), Green River State Recreation Area, East Canon State Recreation Area, Hyrum -Lake State Recrea .ion Area, Otter Creek Lake State Beach, Palisade Lake State Recreation Area, Rockport Lake State Recreation Area, Scofield Lake State . Recreation Area, Starvation Lake State Beach, Steinaker Lake State Recreation Area, Utah Lake State Park, Willard Bay State. Recreation Area and Yuba .. Lake Stale Recreation Area. Some areas provide additional ad-ditional services such as rental boats, boating and camping supplies, gasoline and oil, and refreshment concessions. Six parks have only minimal facilities. They ' are: Big Sand Lake State Beach, Gunlock Lake State Beach, Huntington Lake State Beach, Lost Creek Lake State Beach, Millsite Lake State Beach and Piute Lake State Beach. Launching Laun-ching ramps, courtesy dock facilities, trash containers and pit privy are generally available. ..but modern rest rooms and on-site personnel are not provided. The Utah Division of Parks and Recreation administers ad-ministers Utah's boating and recreation vehicle laws throughout the State. Water Recreation Areas 2. BEAR LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA Located on U.S. Highway K9 on the Utah-Idaho border, one and one-half miles north oi Garden Cay, Utah. Boating, swimming, waterskiing, camping and picnicking await the visitor at one of Utah's finest water recreation areas. The modern marina provides 137 boat mooring slips, snoreline campshe spaces for :i0 recreational vehicles, modern rest rooms and a visitor center. Reservations for boat slips and campsites are available. 3. BIG SAND LAKE STATE BEACH A prime fishing and boating area. Located 11 miles north of Bridgeland, Utah in Duchesne County. Facilities are limited to 20 primitive camp and picnic units, pit privys and a concrete boat ramp. Bring your own water and firewood. 8. DEER CREEK LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA A beautiful 2,400 acre mountain lake in the southwest corner of Heber Valley near Heber, Utah. It has consistently provided some of Utah's finest lake fishing. The area has a 100-foot 100-foot wide boat launching ramp, modern rest rooms with showers, sewage dump and fish cleaning stations, 44-unit campground, and 250-car parking area. 10. EAST CANYON LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA A 680-acre mountain lake, popular to boaters and fishermen alike. Located thirty miles northeast of Salt Lake. City, Utah. Fishing is open year-round.- Camping, Cam-ping, boating, rock hounding and waterfowl hunting in season offers exciting activities ac-tivities for visitors. 34. ROCKPORT LAKE w STATE RECREATION AREA f Located 40 miles east of Salt Lake City near Wan-ship, Wan-ship, Utah. One of Utah's prime water recreation areas featuring 113 picnicking pic-nicking and camping sites, modern rest . rooms and showers. Fishing, water-skiing, water-skiing, swimming and sailboating attract visitors. Restaurant, store, boat rentals, housekeeping cottages, gasoline and other supplies are there for visitor convenience. Resident park ranger on duty. 35. SCOFIELD LAKE MATE RECREATION AREA Utah's highest State park situated 7,600 feet above sea level near Scofield, Utah off U-S. Highway 50-6. Excellent Ex-cellent fishing and boating is found on the 2,800 acre lake. A resident park ranger is on y at all times. Visitors are served by a boat laun-ch'ng laun-ch'ng ramp and slips, Pacing lot and rest rooms. STARVATION LAKE r STATE RECREATION AREA This 3,310-surface-acre lake is located near Duchesne, Utah. It provides water oriented opportunities-fishing, boating. A 74-unit campground, modern rest rooms, showers, fish cleaning and sewage dump stations are there for visitor use. A resident park ranger is on duty at all times. 38. STEINAKER LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA A cedar-studded shoreline greets the visitor at this convenient eastern reservoir. reser-voir. Just off Utah Highway 44, six miles north of Vernal, Utah. It has camp and picnic units, modern rest rooms and two group areas overlooking the lake. A boat launching ramp serves boaters. 40. UTAH LAKE STATE PARK Located on the shore of Utah's largest freshwater lake two miles west of Pi-ovo, Utah. The park provides the major accress to the 95,900 acre lake. Visitors will find a sheltered 30-acre marina, 6 launching ramps, modern rest rooms, olympic-size ice skating rink, recreation center, and BIG SPLASH- The Colorado River through Cataract Canyon is not always on its best behavior, but white water enthusiasts don't seem to mind. Utah's other legendary rivers - also offer white water to suit any taste and a different view of familiar scenes. ' 60 picnic and camping sites. A concessionaire offers eating facilities, boat supplies, sup-plies, boat mooring and gasoline. 42. WILLARD BAY STATE RECREATION AREA A man-made 9,900-surface-acre, freshwater lake, resting on top of the Great Salt Lake flood plain near Willard, Utah. Principle Prin-ciple activities including canoeing, boating, water-skiing, water-skiing, and year-round fishing for crappie and walleye. Visitors will find a 52-unit campground, modern rest rooms, showers, sewage dump station, two boat launching ramps, and marinas. Small boat rentals, food, camping and boating supplies are available. 43. YUBA LAKE STATE RECREATION AREA Located 25 miles south of Nephi, Utah just off U.S. Highway 91. One of Utah's most popular boating areas. Warm water, sandy beaches and excellent walleye fishing attract visitors from April to November. BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS STATE RESERVE Site of "The fastest mile on earth," Bonneville ; Salt Flats Reserve is best seen in autumn when the Bonneville National Speed Trials attract racers and hot rodders from around the world for new attempts at the land speed record. The track itself is a shimmering shim-mering expanse of almost rock-hasalt a remnant of old Lake Bonneville. No developed facilities. 6. CORAL PINK SAMnnilMRS extensive deposits of colorful, mineralized wood, hundreds of fossilized logs, chunks and fragments of trunks and branches of tree remains. A visit to this fascinating prehistoric area is like entering a lime capsule. Huge sections of petrified trees are scattered everywhere with an occasional oc-casional dinosaur bunt' embedded in rock. Many ruins of seasonal habitation sites left by prehistoric Indian inhabitants pervade the area. Wide Hollow Reservoir, inside the park, provides' excellent waier recreation and fishing. The reserve is enhanced by fresh water lakes on Boulder Ml. and red rock arches in Escalante Canyon. 14. GOBLIN VALLEY STATE RESERVE Located 13 miles north of Hanksville. Utah on Utah Highway 24. Offers camping, cam-ping, picnicking, photographing, exploring and hiking. Visitors are attracted by scores of intricately in-tricately eroded formations resembling anything a Derson mieht imagine. " smif:s'i?',;. , pimW2KJ tiifi$ltl STATE RESERVE Eleven miles off U.S. Highway 89 near Kanab, Utah lies a wind-swept area of fine, coral-pink colored sand dunes. It is the site of a mode:-n State park with a resident park ranger, 20-unit pull-through pull-through campground, modern rest rooms, showers and blacktop roads. It is an excellent area for those who enjoy riding recreation vehicles, photography t just relaxing and playing in the sand. 8. DEAD HORSE POINT STATE PARK Located 45 miles south of Crescent Junction off Utah Highway 163. Towering 2,000 feet directly ' above the Colorado River. Dead Horse Point provides a panoramic view of the naturally sculptured pinnacles and buttes of Utah's Canyonlands. GOOSENECKS OF THE SAN JUAN STATE RESERVE Located four miles off Utah Highway 261 near Mexican Hat. Utah. A'r. overlook .'where sightseers sight-seers may view the 1,000 loot deep meandering chasm curved from the Rico and Her'mos formation for-mation by the silt-.'aden San Juan River. The Great Goosenecks of the San Juan River meander over five miles before the visitor's eyes, covering only an air-line distance of approximately one mile. Paved access. Limited lacilities. 16. GREAT SALT LAKE STATE PARK Two State parks provide scenic and recreational opportunities on the world's largest "dead sea." ANTELOPE ISLAND: (38 miles from Salt Lake City). The 2,000 acre Great Salt Lake park on the north tip of Antelope Island is reached via a six and one-half mile paved causeway from Syracuse, Utah. SALTAIR BEACH: (16 miles from Salt Lake City). Located west of Salt Lake City on Interstate In-terstate 80 near the site of the once world famous ' "Saltair" resort. Four and one-half . miles of continuous beach offers visitors saltwater bathing, open showers, modern rest rooms and a refreshment stand. A sailboat marina with 120 slips and a sailor's tack Rendezvous Beach - on the south shore of the lake near Laketown, Utah. The beach front extends for iy4 miles and presently offers 200 campsite spaces and a good opportunity for group activities. ac-tivities. The area is excellent ex-cellent for camping and picnicking on a wide sandy beach front and is a favorite for swimming and small watercraft activity. 23. The new Parkway River provides river side , developments along an 8V2 mile corridor between 1700 South in Salt Lake City and the Davis County' line. Facilities and opportunities include canoeing and float trips with various put-in and take-out points along the river, restrooms, and picnic areas are available at 1700 South Jordan Park, 8th South, and Riverside Park. A new IV4 mile jogging course also , parallels the river at 1700 South. Subsequent developments will include a systematic development of recreational opportunities along the entire 5-count course of the Provo and Jordan Rivers.
