Show Incumbent Blackbourn wants to stay Lindy Blackboum was appointed to the Park City Board of Education last January. She replaced Rand Clark who resigned in December and she is now seeking election for a four-year term. "I feel I have been through my initiation. The first few months were definitely a learning experience and I was very quiet at the meetings. But now I am getting more vocal;" Blackbourn said. She added the job has been much more work than she expected. According to Blackbourn the district is "marching upward." Even though the board members are five individuals with five different viewpoints the experience has been very positive, she said. Among the major policy decisions made since her appointment are teachers' salary raises and the decision to build a new math science wing at the high school. "I am very happy about the teachers' raises. Park City deserves the best teachers available and this will help attract and keep them," she said. "The new math science wing will help correct one of the weaker points in our curriculum. The facilities are really limiting us," she added. Blackbourn supports the current board's trend toward removing extracurricular activities from the academic school day. "I think extracurricular activities are important impor-tant because they are necessary to a well-rounded person. But I want the students out of class as little as possible," Blackboum said. On one issue, however, Blackbourn Black-bourn was ready to take a stand even if it meant going against the rest of the board. She strongly supported rehiring middle school music teacher Bill Huhnke. "I was determined to vote for renewing his contract because be-cause I was impressed with his dedication dedi-cation and loyalty. Sure, we might have been able to find a more experienced experi-enced applicant. But would we have had any guarantee he would have gotten along with our kids? Huhnke had already proved he could," she said. Blackbourn has been an active volunteer in the schools since she and her family arrived in Park City six years ago. She has served on the high school community council for two years and is also busy with the Cub Scouts. "I feel that our children's education is the most important investment we can make," said Blackbourn.
