Show KPCW meets fund goal; alters format by Rick Brough The fundraiser last week for Park I City radio station KPCW met its goal and beyond. The money drive raised at least $7,000 above its goal, said general manager Blair Feulner. With its new funds, said Feulner, the station will look toward an impending move of its facilities to the Marsac Building. The station will also continue with program changes, including a heavier schedule of classical music, more feature news and a possible "KPCW underground" under-ground" format for early mornings. The changes are prompted in part by a University of Utah study taken last winter. Feulner said a study this winter will test public reaction to the station's new programming. Feulner said the drive raised over $19,000. Their goal, he said, was $12,000 the absolute minimum the station needed to get by. Pledges came from 350 people, he added. By comparison, last winter's drive raised $23,000 and had a goal of $15,000. "Traditionally, the summer means less people and less pledges," said Feulner. He was also concerned the Main Street construction construc-tion would have some impact. This will be the last fundraising drive until the summer of 1985. The station has done two drives every year, he said. But last year's winter's drive included an auction which turned out to be very successful, Feulner noted. Now the station has decided to turn the auction into its annual winter activity. He said the station will approve a budget for the fiscal year which begins on Sept. 1. The first priority, Feulner said, is moving the station to its new home in the Marsac Building. The cost, he added, will depend on how much donated labor KPCW can get. Classical music will be expanded to play from 7 to 12 p.m., five days a week, starting Sept. 15. The station, he said, also is toying with the idea of an "underground" format from midnight to 6 a.m. Feulner said there is an audience in Park City of people who work the bars and clubs. "After work, they don't go to bed. They stay up and party." As for the station's weekend schedule, he said that is "up in the air." This year the fundraiser was enhanced by remote broadcasts from disc jockey Dan Wilcox. His only problem, said Feulner, came when he broadcast outside the Egyptian Theatre while workmen were busy covering the trenches. "But they shut down when he broadcast," Feulner said. Actually, two groups of people brought in the money last week. While listeners made donations, Feulner said, the station's board of directors were calling major supporters. support-ers. Feulner said funding chairman Mary Lehmer did an excellent job. He also praised Finegan for working with Park City businesses, who kicked in $10,000 worth of merchandise. "The logistics are pretty awesome, and Susan did a magnificent job," he said. All the businesses will be thanked in a full-page newspaper ad, he said, but important supporters were John Miiller of Deer Valley and Mrs. , Fields Cookies. The summer fund drive has one final divident. Feulner said the funds will bring a matching federal grant of $4,000 from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The station is due to receive it in November, 1985. |
