Show Bums' slip creates standings pileup A logjam has developed at the top of the Park City men's softball league standing, thanks to the first loss of the year by the previously unbeaten Bums in an 18-16 slap from Jans. The Bums still hold first place, but by the slimmest of margins. Their 5-1 record places them half a game ahead of Jans, Doc's and Tokyo Joe's, each of which has staked out a 5-2 mark. Fred Marshall is fifth at 4-3, the Park City Fire Department is sixth at 3-4, and Cornu stands seventh at 3-5. C.R. Sales is next at 1-5, and the Badger Wreckers hold down the cellar with a 0-6 record. Jans' upset July 17 of the league-leading Bums was the result of a come-from-behind effort. The Bums were leading 10-9 in the top of the fifth and when they brought in their ace relief, Rick Sharp, it appeared their unblemished record would remain intact. I But Jans erupted for nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to steal the lead and tighten the league standings. In Wednesday's opener, Doc's scored six runs in the second and seven more in the fourth to seal a 21-13 victory. In Friday's action, it appeared that the Badger Wreckers would finally reel in a win. The cellar-dwellers led, 12-11, after six and one-half innings of play, but Fred Marshall tied it in the bottom of the seventh and went on to score three runs in the eighth inning for a 15-12 win. In other play on Friday, Doc's struck for four runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh and went on to level C.R. Sales, 16-4. Perry Wilkey hammered a three-run three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to break an 8-8 tie to lead Cornu to an 11-8 victory over Jans. In the finale, Tokyo Joe's scored early and often to turn back the Fire Department, 15-9. i |
