And when it was all over, when the strained muscles relaxed, 27 1A and 2A powerlift records were shattered by weightlifters from nine schools participating in the State Powerlift Tournament held at Park City High School on May 18. Park City was the top 1A school with 47 points. The Miners were followed by North Summit - 38, Beaver -1 1 , North Severe - 6 and East Carbon - 6. Union was the 2A champion scoring 74 points. They were followed by Wasatch Academy - 24, Delta - 7 and Juab - 2. North Summit broke eight of the 18, 1A records that fell and Park City had five people break four records. Miners Greg Foote and Nick Caravaglia both squated 310 pounds in the 155 pound class beating the old record by five pounds. The Miners won the championship . on the strength on eight second and six third place finshers. "I knew it was going to be close and we didn't have many kids who could win so it came down to how many kids picked up seconds and Concentration and psyche are keys to victory. John Newland is a picture of concentration as he prepares lift of 420 lbs. thirds," said Bob Burns, football and weightlifing coach. "I'm definitely happy because it shows that our program is working." Last year the Miners, who have had a weightlifting program for three yars, placed second only six points behind North Summit. Burns praised the .efforts of Steve Toly who was pitted against last year's champion Miles Evans, from North Summit in the 175 pound class. Toly was one of the record setters with a squat of 340 pounds. He placed second overall to Evans who won the bench press, dead lift and had the top total weight setting state records in each category. Newland In a Squeaker Senior John Newland, who won the state championship for the Miners in the heavyweight division in his sophomore and junior years. finished second this year, five pounds behind East Carbon's Sam Leonard. Newland started the day's activities by squating a state record 420 pounds and benching 280 pounds. Leonard benched 290 and squated 390, so entering the final event, the dead lift, Newland enjoyed a 20 pound total weight advantage. Newland lifted first. After the first two lifts Newland and Leonard were tied both doing 380 and 410 Burns said it was tough for Newland to lose by only five pounds but felt he left an impression on high school powerlifting because, "his record in squat will definitely be around for awhile". Shawn Packard and Doug Vincent were the only two Miners who took first place in their respective divisions. Packard's lift of 705 pounds was 35 pounds away from a state record in the 135 pound class in total weight set by Park City's Kelly Wright in 1979 and his scuat of 270 ,; ..... ,-- 1 :- - - - i j V- 1 "v. f I ; pounds. iNewland uttea 4U the third time and Leonard responded with 430 pounds. Newland lifted 430 on his final lift and watched as Leonard attempted 455 pounds. "I knew he'd get it. I watched him lift the other weights and knew he was really strong," Newland said. "I think 430 pounds was my tops. It was 15 pounds over my best lift before. I was afraid to try more because if I missed I felt he would have beat me badly. "I'm not really disappointed. Weightlifting is a friendly sport where you don't have to hate the other guy just he weights," Newland added. pounds was only five pounds behind Wright's 1979 record. Vincent, in the 145 pound class, was also close to a state record in the squat with 105 pounds. Rick Potter, formerly of North Summit set the record of 310 pounds in 1980. There was an interesting intrasquad battle going on between 125-pound Miner's Bill Simmons and Kerry Kusiak. Both boys tied in the squat event and Simmons picked up 11 pounds in the bench press. Kusiak bested Simmons by 10 pounds in the dead lift, tut that was not enough. Simmons edged Kusiak by lease Turn to Page 3B Bart Stubbs of Union High School missed his final lift of the day in the 185 lb. class. Tennis Team Tops Continued from Page IB, one pound for second place. Other Miners wo did well and held state records, even if for only several minutes, were 175-pounder Tom Tebbs and 165 pound John Ott. Tebbs dead lifted 445 pounds, five pounds over the state record but was bested by North Summit's Evans i who lifted 460 pounds. J Ott ran into a similar problem but in the squat event. He beat North Summit's Greg Wilde's 1980 rcord by five pounds but on Wilde's last attempt he squated 320 pounds to edge Ott. Burns said he wished he knew of Miner Hogan Wright's prowess in the dead lift. He said only 30 athletes were allowed to compete from each school and he had Wright lift, but only for exhibition. Wright tallied the highest poundage in the dead lift event for 135 pounders with i lift of 375 pounds. |
