Show The Plan' to Air on KUTV September 2 The 15-minute documentary, document-ary, THE PLAN, will have its first television showing Wednesday, Wed-nesday, September 2 at 8 p.m. on KUTV, Channel 2. The PLAN is a powerful new documentary centering, on Michele Meservy of Orem, Utah's Young Mother of the Year for 1978. Filmmakers Diane Orr and C. Larry Roberts became fascinated with Michele's lifestyle after reading a newspaper account of her non-stop daily routine. Michele Mich-ele and her husband, Ray-man Ray-man have five pre-school children ages 6,4,3,2, and 10 months. The Meservy family is devoutly Mormon. THE PLAN was honored as the only Utah film invited for screening at last January's United States Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Where-ever Where-ever it has shown, THE PLAN has provoked a range of reactions and a great deal of discussion. In a fast-paced cinema-ver-ite style, the filmmakers observe the lifestyle, relationships, relat-ionships, interactions and management methods- of Michele and Rayman. Mich ele emerges as the central focus of the film in her attempt to keep up with five children, maintain a house, and care for her husband. The family will be present to talk about the film and their lifestyle. The film has been called an unbiased look at a large family and has therefore left it up to audiences to decipher what they see. Film critic Ginette Gervais says of the film, "...the language of the film would be ambiguous indeed if the camera did not in a perverse way contradict and undername under-name the seeming attempt of the young mother to conform herself faithful to the Mormon Mor-mon social model. The presence of the husband, a . compulsive instigator (of this way of life) turns this film into an original painting of masculine oppression. The humor in this film acts as an effective instrument of indictment in-dictment of social values." The film was promoted at last year's U.S. Film and Video Festival in Park City and played to standing room only audiences. |
