The Park City High School wrestling team has had winning seasons for the past three years and Coach Wayne Carlson is confident the team will continue it's impressive record this year. "We do a little better each year. I hope we can continue that trend," Coach Carlson said this week. The team lost three solid wrestlers last year, Carlson said, and over-all the team is not quite as strong as last year. Rick Provost, Mike Reed, and Tom Martinez graduated last year. But Carlson said he has some strong individual performers. He predicted pre-dicted Cery Provost and Cliff Martinez will be state champions this year. Carlson also thinks the team will have as good or better record than last year. The problem, Coach Carlson pointed out, was not having enough wrestlers to fill all weight categories. Of the 20 wrestlers on the team, five are in the 98 pound weight category and four in the 138 pound class. "We don't have the kids at the right weights, unless we can shrink them or grow them," said Carlson. The coach said the team was strong in 98, 105, 126, 138 and 155 pound classes. There are no Juniors on the team. Carlson said that because of the new wrestling equipment, the team will be able to train and develop better this year. The wrestlers have a new mat to work out on during practice sessions. "There's a good attitude on the team," Wayne Carlson said. And Cory Provost added there was a lot of talent on the team this year. Cory took third place in the State last year and said he hoped to take first in the coming year. Bob Pace, who wrestles in the 119 pound class, said the team should have a good record. "We lost a couple of good guys last year, but we'll still be in there." Coach Carlson said the toughest tough-est competition will be against North and South Summit. Park City wrestles against 10 teams this season. 126 Pound wrestler-, Doug Dean, said, "I think we'll have some good individual wrestlers," and added the team this year is "pretty much the same." Coach Carlson's two assistants will be Buddy Calderwood and Don Sturges. The team began practice November 7. They practice all week from 2:30 to 5 p.m. in the gym at the high school where all home matches will take place. Their first home match is against Duchesne, November 30 begin ning at 6:30 p.m. Carlson began the wrestling program at Park City High School in 1970. He was a NCAA Ail-American wrestler in 1968 and graduated from Utah State University. Last year, Park City finished in I " . All ontri third place in the Region and eighth place .in State competition. Coach Wayne Carlson plans to improve the record and said, "It'll be tougher to finish better this year, but we're at a level where we're nip and tuck" out of first." ps Inrliiria srvin salad har I |
