Show EDITORIAL Represent Your Constituents County Commissioner Bill Wallin of Snyderville seems to have forgotten who put him into office. Appearing before the city council last week Wallin heard a clear and strong message that the citizens of Park City-want City-want Summit County to contribute to the operating costs of the Memorial Building. It does not seem like an unfair request, considering that the building has served as a memorial to war veterans throughout the county since it was built in the 1930s, and we were disappointed, if not surprised, that Wallin seemed unwilling to lend his support to gaining financial help frofn the county. In spite of the fact that a large group of citizens, the Mayor and all members of the city council pleaded with him for support, Wallin spent most of his time defending the views of the commissioners. Instead of pledging to stand up for the area he was elected to represent, Wallin insulted the council by questioning whether a contribution from the county would encourage bad management. We find this attitude appalling and close to ridiculous. Whether Park City pays all the costs of operating the , building or only half, the council has every reason to keep expenses at a reasonable level and no reason to indulge in careless management. The key point Wallin seems to be overlooking is that, regardless of i his personal views, he was elected to represent his constituents. It is the responsibility of any elected official to seek out and represent the views of the people. The commissioners from the Coalville and Kamas areas cannot be expected, to support Park City's interests, but there is no excuse for a so-called representative of this end of the county to ignore his constituency. Bill Wallin is a well-liked man who apparently has good intentions, but he should be reminded that democracy requires him to be a public servant, not a peacemaker among his fellow commissioners. He should not always agree with them. If he has any intentions of seeking another term, Wallin should be aware that voters will not re-elect someone who ignores them. . |
