Initial practices have gone "extremely well" and the Park High Miners basketball team is ready to start its season Friday, according to new head coach Bruce Reid. The Miners will unveil their new fast-break offense and agressive "rubber band" zone defense Friday at Morgan against the powerful 2-A division champs. The home fans will see the revitalized team in action for the first time Saturday, when rival North Summit plays the first pre-season contest in the new Park City High School gym. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. Although several starting players play-ers are returning, Reid said this year's team bears little resemblance resembl-ance to last year's, which one only one regular season game against the Utah School for the Deaf. Instead of the standard center, guard, forward positions, the team will utilize an offense based on a "point man," returning five foot, eight inch senior Brad Goff, with the four other members of the team rotating in equal positions. Goff will run the offense, which Reid says will be "very team-oriented" team-oriented" and will utilize the fast break whenever possible. Reid said the starting team will probably be chosen from six players Goff; six foot, one inch junior Howard Davidson; five foot, nine inch junior Dave Radford; six foot, one inch senior Todd Hunter; six foot senior Brad Dearden; and five foot, ten inch junior Tim King. Radford, who attended Morgan High School last year, and Hunter, who went to East High School in Salt Lake, are both newcomers to Park High. The approach to defense will be very agressive, said Reid, using the "rubber band" defense to "stretch to the ball." This defense features a lot of switching among members of the team and a great deal of movement. Reid said the team would emphasize speed and agressive-ness agressive-ness to make up for their lack of height. Davidson and Hunter, both at six foot, one inch, are the tallest players among the potential poten-tial starters. Reid was enthusiastic about the early practices, which stressed the new coach's emphasis on the running game and on selfless "team play." He said he was very pleased at how quickly the varsity team had picked up his new system and added that the squad "is going to do well. It's only a matter now of making them believers. I'm used to being a winner." Reid was particularly optimistic about chances of winning at home. "We have the biggest gym in the state and the highest altitude. We're going to run our opponents to death." The only sad note going into the season is the loss of freshman Mike Gebauer to knee surgery. Gebauer, a standout on the football team and likely starter in basketball, will be out for the season. I, ,.....jx nijHimmn J.LU. IL1.1 !..' WIMIJI.IIIHIII num.
