Sherry Coehlo is in charge of the volunteers and she said they have met regularly at the elementary school to find out how to help teachers prepare for class by making work the students can use in class, such as math games and a large alphabet dragon. "Our biggest success has been in teachers material workshop," Mrs. Coehlo said, adding there are 12 volunteers in the workshop and they have met 6 times this school year. Teachers attend the workshop, said Mrs. Coehlo, and give examples of what work needs to be done. The volunteers then make the work assignments for the teachers and students. "The teachers are really appreciative of what we do," she added. The volunteer program is also involved in Bookmobile, clerical work, and tutorial. Although the teachers material workshop has been the most successful so far, Mrs. Coehlo said she is hoping to get more volunteers to help tudor students in grades K through 4. Of the weekly workshop, Sherry Coehlo said, "This is Sherry Coehlo helping teachers and that's what we're really here for." There are 25 volunteers taking part in the Marsac Volunteer program. "It's really fun learning materials mater-ials for kids," said Mrs. Coehlo, who was also in charge of Marsac's "Read-A-Thon" held in October. Her daughter, Christie, is in pre-school. "We all get along very good," Mrs. Coehlo said, and added she would like to see more members from the community volunteer for the program. "It's been a lot of work," she said, "but it's been a lot of fun." |
