Show p: " r ? . - ' i 'i- " V No Labor Endorsement of American Party Candidate Local 4264 President Gary Ryan has admitted that last week's endorsement of American Party candidate Bob Trepanier, which created a furor in national labor circles, was, in fact, illegal. Union Representative Neil Clegg, who issued the endorsement statment said, "The problem is that Bob didn't get nominated by any other party, and the Independent slot was already filled; that's why he went American Party. We're sorry he's having to run American, but the party's not telling him nothing. His ideas is good ideas. We do not support the American Party; we endorsed Bob as a person." However, Local President Gary Ryan telephoned the Record to say, "Local 4264 has not, in fact, endorsed the candidacy of Bob Trepanier. Without a vote of our members we can't endorse any candidate. We haven't had such a vote yet. We will hold a meeting on Wednesday at. 4 p.m. at TMI to see how our members vote." The American Party historically has been against the interests of organized labor. Trepanier himself referred to the false endorsement as a "legal technicality," and says that he chose to run on the American Party ticket because he would have a better position on the ballot, and because, "I support the principles of the American Party."
