Five hundred laboring men, mostly Japs and Greeks, wore released from work on the Davis & Weber Counties Canal company's concrete operations today, it being necessary to close down most or the construction on the canal on accouat of frozen ground. This Is quite a difficult piece of work, says Engineer Dostaph. The entire length of the canal Is 9i miles, C'i. miles of which Is completed com-pleted and ready for tho water. The finished goctlon lies In the central part of the waterway. Engineer Lloyd, who has had active ac-tive charge of the construction work, says the remaining three mile3 can be cemented In the spring in aloiit 30 days. The work has gone on remarkably remark-ably well, ho Bays, and tho cemented cement-ed canal so far Is all that could be desired. The economy In water and in repair expenses, says Mr. Lloyd, brought about by virtue of cementing cement-ing the canal, is almost Incalculable to the stockholders. The concrete work Is costing the company an average of about $23,000 per mile, tho cost to date having been about $165,000. The entire cost is to be in the neighborhood of $210,-OrtO. |
