Show HEAVY DEATH-TOLL FROM FOOTBALL. """"When last year 23 young men were killed in football games there was such a public protest against this butchery that the rules were radically changed. It was hoped that the game would be made much less brutal, but the casualty list for this season shows practically no improvement. Here is the record for 1910: Nineteen men killed, 33 legs broken 67 collar bones broken, 36 noses broken, 26 ribs broken, 19 arms broken, 17 ankle3 broken and enough other serious accidents to bring the total of doad or injured up to 4C0 or more. The high school teams supplied eight of the deaths, the athletic clubs six and the college teams five. A number of colleges and scores of high schools and private schools have forbidden football matches in future entirely, or at least until the boys can prove that they can play the game for sport, without killing or maiming one another. |
