Show IEI CAUGHT IN BURNING MINE CANNON CITY, Colo., Nov. 22. Miners caught In the workings of the Fremont Mine of the Colorado Fuel & Iron company, which took fire in an underground mule stable lato this afternoon, are being Hoisted to the surface one by one thruogh an air shaft which offers the only way of escape from tho burning mine. More than 1C0 have reached the surface nnd the mlnn officials declare that all but two of thp men employed under ground have been communicated communica-ted with nnd are safe so far. It is hoped- tbes two also are safe. The fire has been driven to tho main haulage shaft by ventilating air currents and the main shaft is now burning fiercely. Many of the miners still underground under-ground have brattlced themselves In. In chambers where the air Is good and will wait rescue parties before at. tempting to reach the air shafts. The main passages are full of smoke and they were ordered to wait until tho fan at the shaft could clear the passage pas-sage before attempting to escape. The special train carrying the rescue res-cue cars of the Colorado Fuel & Iron company and the government will arrive ar-rive about 11:30 tonighL As soon as the train arrives, trained rescue men with oxygen helmets will I bo sent down to convoy the Imprls- ! oned miner to the surface. As soon as all have been taken out, the ventilating venti-lating currents will be shut off to stifle the f.re and helmet men will be sent down to fight the flames. |
