Show VICTIM OF BEAR TO UNDERGO OPERATION Salt Lake. Oct. 17. Joel Wit beck, brother of J. II. Wltbeck of this city, who was seriously Injured in a desperate des-perate fight with a large brown bear -while hunting In Twelve-mile can-von can-von Saturday, was brought to Salt I.'ke City Sunday and taken to the Groves Latter-day Saints' hospital, where ho will be operator! upon this (Monday) morning. Wlll;?ck was tnken to Manti about midnight Saturday Sat-urday Mr. Witheck's Injuries, which consisted con-sisted of n broken left writ and a bf.dly lacerated shoulder, were at tended at Manti by Drs. Xolsoii and Fears. It was feared- however, that !t would be necessary to amputate his arm. and he was brought to the L. D. S. hospital Witbcck went to the canyon early Saturday morning, accompanied by K. I"). Soroncn, E, I) Woolcy, II. R Clark and Frank Tuttle. Sorenson, Wooley andQlark divided. Near the forks, Tuttle "and Witheck also divided di-vided Mr. Witheck war. hitting n trail in the timber whetn. a bear with a cub approached him from the rear When but a few feet away from him Witheck fired at the bear, but missed It. whereupon the brute sprang at him and grabbed him by the lelt arm, breaking the wrist and terribly tearing tear-ing the flesh and muscles. The bear dragged Witheck ahnit twenty-five rM over the rough ground, but he was successful iir getting get-ting hold of his revolver with his right hand. He fired at the bear, frightening It, and it let go of him and ran off into the timber. When found by his com pan Ions Wltbeck was unconscious.' Ho was then taken tak-en to Manti. |
