Show SERVICE OF CHEER AT I. EJMCH Tho Service of Cheer at ihe First Methodist church last night, the first of n series of special Sunday evenings even-ings at that church, drew a large crowd. The auditorium, wliose lighting light-ing capacity ha8 beeen greatly increased, increas-ed, was bright and full of cheer. The musical program was strong. Mr. Frey's "Rock of Ages" was well rendered; ren-dered; Miss Helen Nelson sang "Ave Marie" with fine technique and great brilliancy, while Miss Uosnlie Hol-berg'a Hol-berg'a rendering of Dudley Buck's "Fear Ye Not. O, Israel," was rich and full of soul. Rev. Frederick Vlnlng Fiahor. the new pastor, spoke on tho "Widened "Widen-ed Vision," founding hts sermon on tho history scene of Ellsha and the young man and the prophet's plea that the eyes of tho young man might be opened He spoko In part as follows: "Life Is largely a question of horizons. hori-zons. Stanley's Pigmies would not believe be-lieve that earth had any sea, they had never seen It. We are all loatii to believe be-lieve in any larger world than we see and our world Is often very narrow. Men live often between tho breakfast table and tho office and live cramped petty lives when life ought to be large and great. "Men are then fairies who wave magic wands over us and open a larger life to us; the school teacher who teaches us tho magic of a, b, c, and tho Jugglery of numbers and opens tho b;g world of books and a universe to us; tho locomotive engineer en-gineer who takes us out of our little town to see the big, big world of mountains, cities and sea so that we can shut our eyes any day and In fancy see tho wider world and the last of all. the preacher who takes us tq the edge of the earth and pilots us out to sec God and eternity. "The thing for the church to do la to broaden lives to men, t. lilt them up out of this petty, selfish little life to that wide vision where, above tho petty trials ami struggles and sin3 of the world, they 'may see tbe Invisible Invis-ible forces, the never ending eternity, Ihe Almighty God to whom we belong." |
