He was S.1 years old. In recognition of his work lu advancing ad-vancing steam engineering and for Improvement in engine const ruction. Mr. Porter received toe John Frltr, medal in 1909. The .only other recipients recip-ients thus far have been Lord Kelvin. Kel-vin. Alexander ;rahaui Hell. Thomas A. Edison and George Wcstlnghouse. Mr, Porter, who was a graduate of Hamilton college, originally practiced law. but abandoned that field as th result of handling a case Involving a patent. He retired from active business busi-ness in 1890
