Rather than have another artist assume an operatic role that she had made famous In this country, despite the fact that that artist art-ist previously had appeared In tho part abroad. Mary Garden, the American Amer-ican prima dona today resigned as a member of Oscar Hammeratcin's Manhattan Man-hattan Grand Opera company. The announced future appearance of Mme. Lina Cavallerl, an Italian singer in Miss Garden's pet part, "Thais," was the cause of the troubel. Mr. Hanimerstoin did not aKept tho resignation of Miss Garden. Instead he issued a btatement, saying: "If tho occurrence has caused her anguish, I deem It my duty to remove the cause." This phrase has lent hope to Miss Garden's friends that the matter will be amicably settled and that Miss Cardan Car-dan soon will bo seen at the Manhattan Manhat-tan in "Salome," for which she has been cast and for which great preparations prepara-tions have been made. |
