Show EXPERT MEDICAL TEST!!! 18 ATTACKED PHYSICIANS SAY IT IS MERELY A QUESTION OF MONEY. It Has Become So Low That It Has Become Be-come a Means By Which Murder Is Legitimatized. New York, Jan. 21. In an address before the Medico-Legal society at its annual dinner last night, Dr. Algernon T. Brlstow. of Brooklyn, attacked expert ex-pert medical testimony which has become be-come so common at murder trials in this country. He declared that the readiness of many physicians to testify testi-fy o whatever lawyers desired has "reduced "re-duced society to a state of anarchy." As a remedy, ho suggests that the state, appoint a board or commission of alienists who may bo picked by judges when needed at trials but who shall receive no pay from the persons Involved. During his address in which he was supported by Clark Bell, retiring retir-ing president of the society, Dr. Pris-low Pris-low said: "No man can be sane, then insane aid then sane again with the rapidity to which these experts testify. It is merely a question of how much money mon-ey Is paid for the testimony. .This li practically woithless. but out of it has come the excuse for an unwritten unwrit-ten law. . "A brainstorm will account for any sort of crime. This was demonstrated demonstrat-ed In the Thaw trials and the Ilains trial. We have come to a point where the courts are recognizing a certain soil of crime as legitimate and it merely means that murder is being legitimatized. This is anarchy. What Is true in one case is true in another, md if there i money enough to secure se-cure expert testimony, any one can excuse his crime on the plea of a brainstorm." Clark Beil said: "Export medical testimony has fallen fal-len so low and especially so in the Thaw trial as to put the profession to the blush. Medical testimony has iv practically annihilated, a fact which is a reflection upon both the bench and the bar. Justico Emory of Maine, has proposed a bill to remedy expert testimony and I believe that I this society should take an Interest in the question In New York state." |
