Show ICE FOR THE FRUIT CARS IN' SUMMER CARLIN ICE HOUSES NOT MADE READY FOR THIS SEASON. Artificial Ice Plant to be Built on the San Pedro Route Truckee to Ship Ice. W. C. Phillips, assistant goneral agent at San Francisco of the Pacific Fruit Express company, Is In town conferring with District Agent Clarence Clar-ence Gun-noil of the same company, Mr. Phillips stated that, owing to tho lateness of the season In which the new Carlln Ice house was mado ready for the winter's crop. It had been found Impossible to secure tho necessary quantity from that district. About 15,000 tons will, therefore, havo ( to bo shipped lu from the Truckee dls- J 'trlct to 9tock the station at Carlln. The new Ice house Is thoroughly up-to-date In Its appointments and cost ! about 565,000, Including the ponds and other equipment In connection. Twenty Twen-ty cars can be Iced at one time, and as high as 300 cars a day can be loaded. The Ice harvost at Truckee Is in progress and from 35.000 to 45,000 tons of Ice are now being stored each j day. The great Ice. houses at Truckee Truc-kee have a capacity of 285.000 tons. Another Ice house Is to be erected by the. Pacific Fruit Express company near Donnor lake. This will have a capacity of 35,000 tons. i A new artificial Ice plant le to ho erected at Las Vegas, Nevada, which will turn out 126 tons of artificial Ice ! per day. Tho plant will cost $260,000, and will be used In Icing the fruit trains on the San Pedro route, carrying carry-ing the products of the California fruit districts to the south; also ttw famous Moapa melons. Mr. Phillips states that the deslr- I able thickness of Ice Is 15 Inches; in fact, where "the commodity Is thicker than that, the cakes are shaved down by automatic cutters as the blocks are taken up Into storage by elevators. |
