Show SOCIALISTS ARE POWER OF UNITED MINE WORKERS Indianapolis. Jan. 28. After a ten vear's struggle, the Socialists among the membership of the United Mine Workers of America have at last ob- tained the balance of power in the annual an-nual national convention, now in session ses-sion here. It is estimated that 300 of the fourteen hundred delegates are either active socialists or have engaged en-gaged to support members of socialistic socialis-tic tendencv in tho convention. A resolution, for the public ownership of public utilities was adopted by tho convention without a dissenting vote. Presidont Lewis finds a rival for his brace in John ' Walker of Illinois, who N is a professed socialist. Mr.. Lewis and his supporters, the conservative uartv in the convention, on the eve of reactlonal strife that threatens their regime seem to have decided that it now would be "bad politics" to antagonize antago-nize so strong an influence as the socialists so-cialists now wield. ' . The conservatives and the socialists have united in defeating resolutions recommending the organization or an independent labor party. |
