Show TELEPHONE THIEVES AT WORK THEY ATTEMPT To ROB AN INDEPENDENT INDE-PENDENT BOOTH. I Had About Succeeded When Scared Away Gang Has Been Operating Operat-ing In Salt Lake City. Thieves inado an unsuccessful effort ef-fort to rob the pay station of the Independent In-dependent Telephone company at the Ogden Union Depot last night, but were -probably driven away, while at work, by the entrance Into the waiting room of Night Depot Muster Fowler or other employes of the company, before be-fore they succeeded in reaching the cash drawer. The Independent tele-phono tele-phono pay station is located in a booth directly cast of the ticket office of-fice In the large waltiug room, and the thieves entered the booth and, while concealed frm view, removed the change slots on top of the cash table and attempted to reach the money mon-ey In the drawer. They failed to get the silver, however, from this narrow aperture, and then reached under the cush tablo and made a determined effort ef-fort to pry the iron cash drawer from Its position Here they were evidently evident-ly Interrupted In their work, and left the booth without accomplishing their purpose. This morning the electric connections connec-tions failed to work between the cash drawer and the main office of the telephone company and Manager Chandler sent ISlectriclan Dehn to investigate in-vestigate the cause of the trouble, with the result that the attempted robbery was disclosed. Investigation brought out the fact that no money had been secured, but had the thieves been left alone a few minutes longer they would have obtained ob-tained quite a sum of money. The pay station Is generally opened twice each month and the collections therefrom run from $15 to $25. Telephone thieves of this character have made several rich hauls in Salt lAko City recently, but this Is the first attempt made at Ogden recently to rob local phonos In this way. |
