Fire hioh fcroke oat yesterday evening in l tiro Sntro tunnel, the immense under- ground canal used for draining the deep mines on the Lode, is now confined con-fined in the bulkheads about 200 feet apart ajid 19,200 feet from the entrance en-trance at Careon river. The loss -will he about $10,000. Fifteen men were taken out unconscious uncon-scious and having death grips on the cage, tools and their own persons. Fortunatelr all were revived. The Are -will soon burn itself out. Virginia City, Nev,, Jan. 28. About 7 o'clock last evening, fire was discovered discov-ered In the Sutro Tunnel at a point 3.500 feet from the . Ward shaft and four miles from the mouth of the tun-' tun-' tel. An alarm was given, and men rushed from all quarters to fight the flames. The fire 1b at the C. & C. Junction, from " "which tunnels run in various directions to connect with the other mines. The smoke, which prevented pre-vented the men from making much headway, finally was carried through the Ccrohhiation shaft, and force pumps were taken In from Sutro. 'After an all night battle the men were able to get within a hundred feet of the Are on the east side and the blaze is now held at the Combination drift, but as yet the extent of the fire In other directions Is unknown. The Tunnel waa driven by the late Adolph Sutro, under a special act of congress and Is twelve by sixteen feet In size and about Ave miles In length. It is now used as a drain for all the Com8tock mines. Several miners were overcome by ihe smoke and are in a serious condition. |
