Show ROCKEFELLER'S GIFTS. An eastern correspondent notes that John D. Rockefeller's latest gift to the university of Chicago, which has just been announced, raises the total of his bequests to tbjs institution to nearly $25,000,000, or just $1,000,-000 $1,000,-000 less than the fine which tho Standard Stan-dard Oil company of Indiana will not havo to pay a fact which has caused covert speculation at the Midway institution in-stitution as to what would have been received, if anything, if tho line had been upheld. The announcement of the bequest followed the dismissal of tho case against the "Oil Trust" by less than two weeks, which may or may not have been a coincidence. Rockefeller's other gifts to the university univer-sity range over a period of twenty years, the first one having been made in January, 18S9, and the last one previous pre-vious to this being in January, 1909. The various installments range in size from $143,322. the smallest, to $3,245,-000, $3,245,-000, the largest, and Incidentally ono of the largest ever made to an educational educa-tional institution. The occasion of the last benefaction was the seventieth convication of the university, and the gift come as a surprise in view of the million dollars which had been received re-ceived lu January. |
