Show STARTED FIRE; Harry Smith, Temporarily Deranged De-ranged by Drinking Vanilla Extract, Court Told ! Temporarily demented as the result re-sult of a quart of vanila extract, taken tak-en internally, caused Harry Smith to desert a firo accidentally started at the school for the deaf and blind, according ac-cording to the theory advanced before Judge D. R. Roberts of the city court today by County Attorney Joseph B. Bates. Smith, who appeared on a drunk charge, pleaded guilty. He was askedr to tell what he knew regarding the fire and in clear-cut language said that he had removed a quart bottle of vanila extract from the school nan- try. Ho took the liquor to his room and drank it, at the same time smoking smok-ing several cigarettes while sitting on the edge of his bed. He said he remembered re-membered drinking nearly all tho contents con-tents of the bottle and then his memory mem-ory lapsed. He awakened several hours later, at the stables of the school and returned to his room to find his bedding in disarray and the odor of smoke permeating the room. He inquired as to the cause of the fire, he claimed, and was informed that he had started it. Ho was arrested and taken to. the! station. County Attorney Joseph B. Bates recommended that the maximum sentence sen-tence of six months lnsthe county jail bo given. Judge D. R. Roberts gave the man 90 days nt hard labor. oo |
