Show REFUSE TO LET TEACHERS FREE School Board Denies Petitions; Scored for Wanting to Break Contracts The routine business of tho city board of education was enlivened last night by a discussion resulting from tho petition of two teachers at present pres-ent under contract to teach in the city schools next year that they be released from their contracts in order or-der to accopt appointments at higher salaries under othor boards of education. edu-cation. Tho. petitions were unanimously unani-mously refused. Commenting on the situation this morning Supt. W. Karl Hopkins, said: "Teachers must come to understand under-stand tho meaning of a contract It is to be fulfilled to the letter once it Is signed by both parties. We extended ex-tended tho time to many teachers in which they might come to tho conclusion con-clusion whether thev wlshori to re main in Ogden city board of education educa-tion service or not. Tho mere cx-cuso cx-cuso that one has the chance of a better Job somewhere else at a higher high-er salary is no ground for petitioning petition-ing tho board to release the signatories signa-tories of a1 contract held by us. "Of course, salaries arc better in somo cities than others, and conditions condi-tions also may be of a belter class, but all that should be taken into consideration before tho contract, here Is signed." Asked as to what action might bo jaken by the board should a teacher "take a chanco" and go to another appointment, or accept one without getting release here Mr. Hopkins said "Wo should first of all enter our protest to the board that., had engaged the teacher under contract with us. In ninety-nine cases out of every hundrod that board would not engage the teacher after the protest had been mado. If they did wo should force the teacher to fulfill ful-fill the contract here. |
