That is the date set for the next ring appearance of Jack Dempsey, Demp-sey, world's champion heavyweight boxer, according to his manager, Jack Kearns. Yep, and If the battle is staged It will be one of the first appearances of the champion since his victory over the giant Jess Willard at Toledo last July 4. The fight will be staged at Benton Harbor, Mich., just east of Chicago and will be staged by Floyd Fitzsim-mons. Fitzsim-mons. Several men have been named as opponents for the champion but as yet the "lucky" bird is yet to be selected. se-lected. However, the dope seems to favor Billy Miske. Fred Fulton, Willio Meehan, Bill Brennan and Tony Mel-choir Mel-choir are also named as "probable" candidates. However, some of tho fans are of the opinion that Fred will not be the man named as he is out to put the kibosh on the present titleholder and if Fred would be successful curtains cur-tains for Derapsey's chances at the Frenchman, Carpentier. Many or tne tans have not yet recovered re-covered from the shock sent broadcast when Fred announced that ho deliberately deliber-ately 'slipped" his fight to, Dempsey, and there are still those who -believe that Fred can whip the champion. However, there are just asmany more who back the U.tahn..-- Billic. Miske or'Bill Brennan loom as the real, contenders for the scrap which jvill. bethe first and last lor the champion prior to his big scrap with Carpentier. It should,, be a thriller if staged and plaps are already being BZLLyjWISKZ; . made by Fltzsimmons for the "big show." Dempsey has been engaged.in "movie" "mo-vie" work in Los Angeles for the post five months and during that time had done but little boxing outside of a Ht-tlo Ht-tlo sparring with Terry Keller of Ogden. Og-den. However, Kearns states that Jack is ready for the gong. In tho east little interest has been manifested over the tilt duo to the fact that Jack has not yet settled his little trouble with Uiicle Sam. Easterners East-erners In some parts of the east say that the champion will not be able to draw a crowd until his little trouble is settled once and for all. The trial set for June 7 will no doubt settle it one way or tho other. While Fitzsiminous has the signature signa-ture of the champion, according to Jack Kearns, tho promoter is not as yet spending his money for advertising advertis-ing purposes. Nope, he is wating for the final decision, before he decides to spend his dough. And perhaps Fltz is using good judgment. ' With it all comes Willie Meehan, the fighting gob, who has two decisions deci-sions over the champion. Little Willie says he has earned the right to battle the champion to'a finish fin-ish and while the opponent for the champion has" not been named, Bill seems to stand as good a chance as the other candidates. Time will tell, Bill, perhaps you will draw the lucky seven. At any rate whether it is Brennan, Meehan Fulton, Tony Mel-choir Mel-choir or BilHe Miske the fans are on the lookout expecting a first rate scrap. Let's hear the bell. |
