Show Freshman at Crimson School Should Be World Beater Before Ending Career During the past twenty years the state of Utah has developed some first va.te distance men and in many cases the men have won laurels galore on foreign soli.' In the early days at tho University of Utah Jimmle Wade was the Idol of the fans. Jimmle covered the mile in a dual meet In -1:45 agnlnst the great Taylor one jcear, his senior year, and since that time the college mark was lowered to 4:33.4 by Nathan Tolman. Tolman made his new record in 1913 whilo a student at the B. Y. C. at Logan. I And only last Friday a new man with a scholastic reputation as a runner run-ner donned the togs for the Crimson in the mile and half-mile events. In me lormer eveni ine youngster wiiu answers to tho name of Sayman Kerr showed his class when he stepped the mile in tho record time of 4.32.2, thus bringing the record back to the Utah school and placing the name of Kerr in the halK of fame. Tho first lap, the first 440 yards of the race, was covered in 59 seconds and from that' pace until the finish Kerr with Hart of the Aggies showed a burst of speed that would do honor to an old timer, lie finished his race with the ease of a star with years of training. Yep, and to think that Kerr is only a first year student What will he accomplish ac-complish in the remaining three years of his school career? That of course is a hard question to answer but the star should bo able to lake seconds galore from his new marks before he says adieu to the track game and before be-fore he forsakes tho spikes for the simple life. Kerr started his career at the East high school In 1915. That season, although al-though but a midget in size, he entered en-tered the division meet and finished third in both the mile and half-mile events. TTf was Tint down-hearted. however, and his pluck the following year brought him home second in the mile event. d From 1916 until 1919 Kerr was out of competition but in 1919 he won both the milo and half-mile events on a poor track at Logan from Brown, the speedy star of tho B. Y. U. His! real class was then administered and the critics of the track game then and there predicted a great future for the youngster. The future has in store fame galore for the youngster and unless the wise owls miss their guess Kerr will be stepping the milo in record time before be-fore he completes his schooling. In tho track and field games staged here last week he won hands down from a fast field in 4.49.4 in the mile event. Thus Utah now boasts of a miler of class, a miler who will be able to uphold up-hold the class of tho school anywhere at any time. May his success in the future be just as great as it has been during the 1919-20 seasons. oo |
