Show Reproduce Address of. Supt. W. Karl Hopkins At the request of a number of students and parents who listened to the five minute address which W. Karl Hopkins, superintendent of the city board of education, delivered at the commencement exercises in the Orpheum theatre on Tuesday evening the following notes of tho speech arc published: Principal Bccson, members of the faculty, latVes, and gentlemen: "This is indeed one of the happiest occasions of my life. Happy becauso I feel highly honored in being chosen to represent the Board of Education In conferring diplomas upon not only tho largest class over to graduate from tho Ogflen High school, but by the confession of the members themselves a class roknowned for its girls, Its athletic ath-letic young men, and its 112 profound -scholars. I have known these young men and young women less than a year, yet In that time I havo learned to admire and to honor them most sincerely. There is not a "scrub" among them. And now to you, members of the class of 1920, may I remind you that High school graduates are constantly in demand. G.o out into tho world and give It your very best, and the best will come back to you. I want to beg your Indulgence for just one moment while T give you what I consider the fundamental requirements re-quirements for a successful life. Unimpeachable Integrity. This is the very foundation. With this as a starting start-ing point the rest will be relatively easy. Loyalty. As a rule T find High school pupils loyal. Be loyal to the people with whom you work or associate. as-sociate. Make your employer believe that you are' proud to bo with his department de-partment or company. Get in line or get out. Go on and obtain a liberal education educa-tion in the finer things of life, in art. in literature, in music for these will contribute toward success in life. Make friends. Enemies don't pay. Whatever your misfortunes in life, just laugh. It is great to havo friends; It Is greater to be a friend. Concentrate. Learn to concentrate and think upon tho problems in your mind until you have reached a conclusion. con-clusion. Don't be -afraid to make mistakes mis-takes but donit make tho same one twice. Go to work. Tou may not find yourself your-self the first ypan but don't change because difficulties come up or troubles trou-bles arise. Don't be a quitter. Preser-vorance Preser-vorance la one of the secrets of success. suc-cess. Givo. up pretense, worry, discontent. The only aristocracy of tho future Is the aristocracy of accompllsment. Tho true life Is ono of democracy and simplicity. You will succeed If you aro truo to your ideals, and not because you havo wealth or social position. This is what High school pupils must learn, and they are learning It fast. And now, If you will como forward, it will be my pleasure in behalf of tho Board of Education, to confer uj - you your hard earned diplomassome thing which cannot be bought, but which can only be earned through four years of earnest and painstaking effort. |
