Show EDITOR OF LABOR WORLD IS CHARGED WITH A BREACH OF CONFIDENCE BY REV. MATTHEWS 'The Editor, The Ogden Standard. Sir: May I ask ihe kind permission jof your space and time to read and publish the following letter and my 'comment thereon? "Ogden. Utah. July 30, 1919. "The Editors of The Western Labor World, ti:den, Utah "Gentlemen: With regard to a 'story' which appeared in your columns col-umns of a week ago on the dead suoject of the late superintendent of city schools, Henry' C. Johnson, will you please inform the pres- ni writer through the columns of iir naper what your answer is to the following questions? (1.) "Seeing that about 25 per cent of the male population of Ogden are technically 'ministers of the gospel,' which of that great host wrote the story you refer to? of what church la he the minister minis-ter and what is his name." (2 ) "By whose authority did this minister of the gospel write the story on the late superintended! superintend-ed! to which you refer? (3.) "Who is the editor and i what is the paper for whom the minister wrote the story? (4 ) How did your correspond-i correspond-i ent get hold of the copy used in the story referred to? (5 ) "Is your correspondent named Durlin J Wheeler, and is he at present the city editor of the Ogden Standard? (6.) "Did he receive the editor 1 of the Standard s permission to use the manuscript referred to? If not. how did he get hold of it? ""iour publishing of this letter and your reply will oblige, Yours Faithfully, The Western Labor World appeared yesterday with a "story ' referring to tho above letter, but not printing my communication verbatim. As what the writer says in his story is irrelevant, will you please allow me to answer my own questions The answers may be enlightening to the ccnera'i public, pub-lic, and especially to that pail of il which reads the Western Labor World More enlightening still will my answers an-swers be to those people who are at one with the labor candidate for the mayoralty office of this city. The minister referred to in question one. is the Rev, Godfrey Matthews ofi the First Congregational church of this city. In answer to question 2 and 3, the minister named received au-ihority au-ihority to write a story on the de - parture of the late superintendent ofi city schools for the Ogden Standard by the editor of that paper. In answei to question 4, the correspondent cor-respondent referred to confessed to the present writer that he picked up the copy from his desk Question i answered by the f.iet 'that the correspondent is named hurlin N Wheeler, that at the lime he picked up the copy he was acting city editor! of the Ogden Standard, and further, :in answer to question 6, he did not re- , reive the permission cf the editor of the Standard to use the copy referred to, nor did he receive the permit of! j anybody else in authority on thc Stan- I dard. The whole matter is a storm In a teacup except for the following qualifications: qualifi-cations: (1) The minister had a perfect I right to follow good reportorial cus-: cus-: torn by basing his story on accredited facts which he received from the office of-fice of thc board of education. (2) That the copy he received was the property of the Ogden Standard and Mr. Wheeler had no right to "lift" the copy and use it on anotner paper while in the pay of the Ogden Standard. Stan-dard. 'The whole matter is one of honor. .The minister did his duty by the editor edi-tor of the Ogden Standard and Mr Wheeler did not.
