Those who saw in the guaranteed price of wheat, established by the government as a war measure, the root of all evil leading to the high cost of living, must seek some other explanation for the skyrocket prices, as wheat is beginning to command even more than the price I fixed by the government. The real cause of high prices, we believe, is to be found in Europe's dire necessities, and the greatly inflated volume of money due to exigencies ex-igencies of war. Added to the monetary inflation is the call on the United States for food supplies and manufactured goods of every description, which I tppeal is made from ail over the world. With limited supplies to meet a world demand, the tendency of prices must be upward. Whether to this abnormal condition, there is attached profiteering and monopoly is yet to be determined. Wherever monopoly is found, action should be taken by congress. |
