B Hulaniski, at the open-air meeting in H City Hall square last night. The pur- B pose was to stimulate recruiting, so B that Ogden's quota in the army and fl navy may be obtained this week with- H out the draft. H The crowd was not as large as ex- H pected, on account of the recurring 1 gusts of wind and the lack of a musical musi-cal program. The weather will be Ideal for tonight's to-night's meeting and music also will probably be supplied. Dr. A. S. Condon, gallant veteran h soldier and Utah beloved poet-laureato, H will preside at tonight's meeting. He H has promised some of his friends to H wear for this occasion his regular B army uniform. Despito his ndvanc- H ing age, Dr. Condon still is young, H both in spirit and appearance, and H several times lately he has appealed H for -an opportunity for active service H in the national cause. H Dr. Condon's address tonight, what- H ever form it may take on the insplr- H atlon of the moment, is sure to thrill Hi and delight every hearer. l The other speakers tonight will be i the Rev. Christian It. Garver, pastor H of the Methodist church, and Hein- B hart Gideon, a popular young volun- H teer soldier. M Captain Hulaniskl's address last night evoked genuine enthusiasm. He reviewed the causes of the world war and Its meaning to America. Another speaker was John E. Sneddon, Sned-don, who described tho great historic events attending tho development of tho United States as xi nation. Ho traced the continuous strugglo for freedom from early days down to the present titanic conflict. "Our country," coun-try," he said, "now expectB every young man who Is physically able will respond to the call for the defense of the flag, which symbolizes the achievements achieve-ments of its defenders on land and sea." J. C. LIttlefield declared he had been born in Utah and knew Utah had no slackers. He resented the Insinuation that any ono in all Utah would fail to respond to tho call of the country. |
