Crumbling prices at the opening of tho stock market today, extended rlurinn- fho forenoon trading Into a severe break which carried the market down from two to six points in virtually all parts of tho list. Tho liquidation appeared to be provoked chiefly by the publication publi-cation of tho government's war taxation taxa-tion policy. The market was feverish and unsettled. un-settled. United States Steel broke over two points to 112 5-8, Bethlehem Steel, old stock 10 points to 125 and other Industrials, including tho principal prin-cipal munitions and equipments 2 to 6 points. Some of tho dividend paying rails fell to lowest prices of recent years. Net losses from last night's close Included In-cluded 4 3-4 points for SL Paul, Union Un-ion Pacific 3 1-4; Canadian Pacific, 2 3-1; Southern Pacific, 2 1-4. Motors Mot-ors and shippings Joined in tho recession, re-cession, with losses of 2 to 5 points. Chicago Grain. CHICAGO, May 9. Fresh advances In tho wheat market today resulted from the government crop report showing tho largest abandonment of winter wheat acreage over known in the United States. Excited rushes to buy carried prices up 14c, notwithstanding notwith-standing that values yesterday had already al-ready scored net gains of ju3t that amount and had broken all previous records. Corn as well as wheat smashed anew the high price record. The mar-1 kct Jumped rapidly with wheat on scattered buying. After opening 1 l-4c i to 2 3-4c up, prices continued to as- J cend.
