Show oo IN PRAISE OF THE WEST. Once a year, the Donvcr & Rio Grande railroad Issues the "Red Rook," made up of contributions from many sources, extolling the virtues of the West The publication has more merit than any other book of similar purpose to reach our dcHk. Thero are 300 pages of well illus-traied. illus-traied. closely printed matter and our one objection is that the type is too small and too much matcri.nl (if a high class is crowded into a compara. lively small space. No district on the Rio Grande system sys-tem Is overlooked and Ogden comes in for its full share of compliments, including telegrams from the local newspapers and an article by .lames P. Casey, formerly of the Publicity Bureau. Some literarv ability is displays! and even poetry Is not barred as the following. "Western Land," discloses: We love it, realm of the sun-kissed now On a hundred leagues of crest Whence watch o'er valleys and plains below The gods of the magic West. Oh. realm of a beauteous, fertile land' Of a blue and flawless sky! The friendly grasp of the Western band. The smile in the Western eye! They come, the folk of the worn-out East. In search of their broad estate; They come, on the Westward trail released. Where the heights of the morning wait. From smothering street grown gray with care. From the languid Southern shore. They breathe deep breaths of the Western air And stumble and sigh nor more. The dreamer wakes to a dream made true In the glow of the sunset fires The toiler springs to his task anew. At the beck of his heart's desires. Hope for the weak, bright vouth for the old. Homes for the homeless throng, Where the brave, glad arms of the West enfold. And the pulse of the West bents strong. nr. |
