Show WIDOW BUTLER TESTIFYING San Angelo, Texas, Jan. 19. Mrs Malcolm C Butler, widow of the late Lieut. Colonel M. C Butler, wa6 the principal witness for the state today in the trial of Harry J. Bpanell, who is charged with killing his wife, Mrs. Crystal Holland Spanell. and laeut. Tulonel Butler at Alpine. Tex , July 20 last The present trial is on the indictments indict-ments for the alleged murder of Mrs Spanell The defendant is to be tried for the alleged murder of Colonel But-ter But-ter on July 25. Mrs Butler told of rho automobile automo-bile ride she, Mrs. Spanell and Butler took shortly before the shooting, to the home of a woman suffering from tuberculosis who had written Colonel Butler asking him to furnish her a tent, so she could live in the yard, instead of the house. After Buller conferred with the woman, the witness wit-ness testified, they returned to tho hotel, all three going to Butler's room to wash their hands, leailnp contagion from the sick woman. While in Butler's room. Mis. Butler 6aid Spanell came upstairs and she j saw him peering about as if looking for someone. Then he paw Spanell in the door of Butler's room, where : he said. "Crystal, haven't I told you J "I'm noi alone, Mrs. Butler is here," Mrs. Spanell replied. "Spanell then called to me asking if I was there," witness continued. "Spanell was angry and said: 'Here, alter, when you come up here, turn on i he lights ' "The lights had been turned off preparatory to going down stairs. Mrs Buller said, and while she was waiting wait-ing for her husband to come in from the street, Spanell, his wife and their little daughter got in the auto. After goinx a few feet." the witness testified, testi-fied, "Spanell slopped the car. ihe daughter got out and Spanell railed to Buller: 'Major, come gel In.' Butler But-ler did so, and the car drove off." in a few minutes the witness heard the shooting. |
