What is being accomplished by the police department depart-ment in the stamping out of vice in the city, was detailed to the city commission yesterday by Chief of Police Po-lice J. Parley White. Chief White spoke particularly of his latest step in Inforcing the law which prohibits the dispensing of liquor li-quor in cafes where women of questionable ques-tionable character congregate. He told the commission that a few days ago he had called the numerous cafe ownc-rr. into his office and explained to them that the law would be rigidly inforced beginning midnight Wednesday. Wednes-day. Chief White said that some of the cafe owners demurred to his action, contending that it would practically put them out of business. "That is precisely what I would like to see happen," was the retort of the chief. The chief of police said, however, that there was already a noticeable improvement im-provement and that the law would he absolutely Inforced. Women of the street are also coming com-ing under the strict attention of the department, and Chief White said that street solicitation would be thoroughly thor-oughly stamped out. The chief's explanation of the work came up in the consideration of the ; request for additional men on the force. When Commissioner Karl A. Scheid asked if he could be assured that professional gambling and street solicitation for immoral purposes would be stopped if more men were allowed, Chief of Police White replied: re-plied: "Such conditions will be absolutely stamped out in this city within the next sixty days, whether the Increase la the force is allowed or not" |
