Show 60II! SIS CLAIM A VICTORY Ii IDE (Herald-Republican). State-wide prohibition won a victory vic-tory in Salt Lake county last night in the primaries of the Republican party to select delegates to the state convention at Ogdeh. While the business bus-iness district of tho city showed its wet tendencies by tho selection of delegates, choice of the residence, nnd county districts more than offset off-set the business district's selection. Edward E. Jenkins, candidate for the Republican nomination for governor, received a plurality of the delegates olected in the county with Governor William Spry and- Nephi L. Morris running second and third, respectively, respective-ly, in the number of delegates secured se-cured D. O. Rideout secured a uum-. uum-. i I HI -II I I I II I llllft'- ber of delegates in tho county and John C. Mackay also received a num- Ibbh ber in both the city and the county ! districts. The primaries witnessed the warmest contests ever staged in the ranks of the Republican' party In Salt Lake county. Every candidate in tho field for- the gubernatorial nomination had his workers in all districts and printed ballots were used by the majority of workers in getting their delegates elected. In ono or two of the districts automo- H biles were used to haul voters to the ' I polllng places, but this was the ex-ception ex-ception rather than the rule. (Salt Lake Tribune). Governor William Spry, as a candl-date candl-date lor renomlnatlon, captured a ma-jcrlty ma-jcrlty of the Salt Lake county dele- : gates to the Republican state conven- tion at last night's primaries, getting more than all the other candidates for governor put together. Governor S pry's nearest competitor was Nephi L. Morris. The "federal bunch" can-dldatc- for governor, Edward E. Jen- 'H kins, showed a weak third in the tally of tho delegates. There were scat- tcring delegates in the city and a : number of the country districts favor- i able to Oscar W. Carlson, D. O. Ride- ; out and John C. Mackay, the other ; candidates for governor. These three . all live in the southern end of the ; county. The intense interest the Republican j gubernatorial race has aroused, and I the Interest, as well, in the United States senatorial race, and the con- ! tost for the congressional nomination i in this district, served to bring out j tho Republican voters in unprecedent- j ed numbers for a primary. Frequent- j ly primaries are perfunctorily attend- ' ed by a few voters in every district; j last night it was estimates that more ; than SO per cent of the Republican voters turned out to cast their ballots . in behalf of heir favorite candidates. ' jH The result elated the friends of : Governor Spry. With Salt Lake coun- j ty the home of si.x candidates for ! governor, and the hottest battle- ground In the state, they regarded I it as a splendid victory for and a . testimonial to the governor that ho j should be accorded a larger number : of delegates than tho combined oppo- ! sition, and they feel now that his nomination by the Republican state 1 convention, when it meets next Tues- j day in Ogden, Is assured. |
