CZERNOWITZ HAS BEEN EVACUATED London, Jan. 5, 2:37 a. m. The Pe-trograd Pe-trograd correspondent of the Havas agency announces that the Austrians have evacuated Czernowitz, the Russians Rus-sians have seized all the heights dominating dom-inating the town. A large number of prisoners have been taken by the Russians, including includ-ing many Germans. Petrograd, Jan. 4, via London, Jan. 5, 5:25 a. m. The official communication communi-cation from general headquarters issued is-sued today reads as follows: "The Germans tried to cross the Dvlna In the region of Ellsenhole, but were thrown back by our fire. We put to flight Germans wearing white coats, who attempted to approach ap-proach our trenches in the region of the Tsargrad station. "In the region of Szartorysk the enemy was driven from the wood between Koshuknlovka and Podche-revitchi Podche-revitchi station. In the region of the middle Stripa our troops, having crossed the line of wire entanglements entangle-ments occupied the enemy trenches to the east of tho village of Biela-vlntzo Biela-vlntzo and took by storm an Isolated fortified enemy work. "Northeast of Czernowitz we occupied oc-cupied a line of trenches and repulsed by the concentrated fire of our artillery, ar-tillery, enemy counter-attacks, the enemy en-emy sustaining heavy losses."
