Show KIT IN THE SEA DEPTHS A piece of iron will sink to the bottom no matter how deep the water is, because waater is only slightly compressible. If water were nighty compressible, as air is, the water at a great depth would be much denser, and therefore there-fore heavier, and as object would sink until it reached a point at which 'its weigh would be less than that of the water which it displaced and there it would float as clouds float in the atmosphere. But a cubic foot of iron weighs more than a cubic foot of water at a depth of two miles .just as it does at the surface, and therefore continues sinking until it reaches the bottom. The ocean has been sounded to a depth of 32,088 feet, or over 6 miles. This is just off the Philippine Island- of Min dano. Several other points in the Pacific show depths of over 30,000 feet. Prom the lowest sea depth to the highest mountain peak is (61,090 feet, which is about 1-700 of the earth's diameter. The Christian Ilerald. |
