Show jj jj THE THOUSAND MEN ON STRIKE Pickets at Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company Hinder Workmen From Entering Enter-ing Plant. Youngstown, Ohio, Jan. 7. Because Be-cause of strike rioting last night and today at the plant of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube company in East Youngstown, Sheriff, jj C ,Umstead telegraphed to Governor 'Willis at Columbus Co-lumbus today to inquire whether state troops were available 'in case they were needed to preserve order. The sheriff, however, expressed the belief that he would not ned troops to control con-trol the situation. Governor Willis replied that he had dispatched Brigadier General Speaks of Columbus and Lieutenant-Colonel Weybrecht of Alliance to Youngstown and ordered them to have as many companies as possible of the Ohio National Guard ready for strike duty. Six Thousand Men Idle. t The situation at the plant of the Republic Iron and Steel company where 2,500 men are on strike and 6,000 idle as a result remained unchanged un-changed today Last night strikers threatened to attack the office buildings build-ings but were dispersed by the police. Both plants are independents and are not affectcl by the announcement of the United States Steel corporation that all emnloves would get an in crease in wages of ten per cent The management of both concerns have offered the employes an advance of three cents an hour -from 18 1-2 to 22 1-2 cents but the strikers have refused, re-fused, insisting on 25 cents. One man was Injured. The strike forces had grown today to 3,000. There are 9,000 employes of the plant. Strike pickets during the night and early today refused to permit workmen to enter the plant. Those who attempted It were greeted with showers of cobblestones, bricks and clubs. Street cars were stopped, workmen on board dragged off and placed on cars going In opposite directions and sent away. Stones- were thrown through the car windows. |
