Show oo JOS. CHEZ ADDRESSES THE LUMBERMEN ON DILL 106 At the session this afternoon, Senator Sena-tor .Joseph Chez addressed tho state convention of the Lumberman's association as-sociation now in session at the Hermitage, Her-mitage, and devoted considerable time In discussing the provisions of Senate Bill No. 106 which passed the last legislature and became effective May 12. Senator Chez Introduced the bill and was one of its most ardent champions, cham-pions, and believes it will prove a blessing to the person who undertakes to erect or repair a building, by contract, con-tract, as well as to the laborer and mechanic who perform the work, and likewise to tho dealer who furnishes the materials. It provides among other things that the contractor or person who undertakes under-takes to construct, alter or repair a building, must furnish to the person having such work done, a good and sufficient bond in an amount equal to the contract price for the faithful fulfillment of the contract, and for the prompt and full payment of all work and labor performed as well as materials furnished therefor. The law expressly makes it incumbent incum-bent on the contractor to provide such a bond In all cases where the contract amount is in excess of $500, If demanded by the owner or person having tho work done. Should tho person fall to demand the bond from the contractor, ho himsolf becomes liablo for all accounts for materials furnished and labor performed. Tho bond required may be obtained from a surety compauy or It may bo executed by the individual with two good sureties. It Is tho judgment of those who have watched the new law in Its op-oration op-oration since it went into effect that It has established its value in tho following fol-lowing particulars: It protects the person having tho work done. It safeguards the laborer and tho mechanic who perform the work, and the dealor who furnishes the building materials. It creates no hardship on the con- tractor, for the law permits him to furnish a surety company bond which can be obtained for a small premium, or he can give his individual bond with two sureties without cost to himself. him-self. It supplies the defects in the present pres-ent Men law, which in many cases wholly fails to protect the owner, the laborer, and the dealer who furnishes furnish-es the building matorials. |
