Show STRIKERS RIOT; STONES THROWN St. Louis, Aug 13. A running fight between 500 strikers and sympathizers on one side and three non-union drivers driv-ers and a score of policemen on the other, which terminated in a riot in front of the St. Louis Transfer company's com-pany's stable tonight was tho Initial act of violence in the strike of 1,500 transfer drivers and chauffeurs which began here today. Tho fight began at a postofficc substation, sub-station, where twenty pickets were waiting for three drivers who had been hauling mall during the day. There wfas only one policeman at the station, but he held off the strikers while the last load of mail was being taken from the wagons. Rioters Pelt Drivers. As the empty wagons started for their stables the crowd of strikers which had hooted and threatened the drivers was considerably augmented. The policeman, foreseeing trouble, turned In a not call. Before the wagons had gone half a dozen blocks 500 men and boys wore pelting the drivers with stones. The first squad of police reinforcements reinforce-ments arrived heie and arrested one of tho mob leaders, but the prisoner was rescued by the crowd before a patrol box was reached A little farther far-ther down the street more police met tho rapidly growing mob and again attempted at-tempted an arrest. Again the strikers and their sympathizers affected a rescue. res-cue. Lashing their horses to the utmost, the drivers made a final dash and reached the stable two blocks away before their pursuers, mingling with a crowd of spectators, arrived. A score of persons were injured by bricks and stones, but none seriously. The police used their clubs freely during the riot In an effort to retain possession of their prisoners, and eyewitnesses eye-witnesses declared later that the drivers driv-ers were fired 6n twice by men In the crowd. Neither of the shots is said to have taken effect. Officers of tho teamsters' union, disclaiming all responsibility for the riot, said It was the work of Irresponsible Irre-sponsible sympathizers. They said they Intended to conduct kthe strike without violence. |
